The title track is a reggae adaptation of La Marseillaise , the French national anthem. Soon after the song's first appearance on television on April 1, a controversial appearance followed as the recording was perceived by some as an insult to the French Republic , it became a big success.
Gainsbourg received death threats upon release of his cover of the French national anthem. Deeply hurt, in turn the singer published a striking reply. Other critics did not like that the original text was truncated, half of the chorus line including the most military-oriented section of the song being edited out. Some years later in , Gainsbourg purchased the original manuscript of "La Marseillaise" at an auction, which was signed by the composer. A short European tour featuring the Jamaican group The Revolutionaries see-line-up below but not the I-Three followed in December , culminating in a series of shows in Paris.
At a show in Strasbourg, outraged paratroopers showed up in the concert hall and the show was cancelled. Serge Gainsbourg nevertheless came onstage on his own and courageously sang the regular national anthem, stating that he gave " La Marseillaise its original revolutionary meaning back ".
The soldiers then sang along with him in a military salute posture. The event was shown on TV news, causing more controversy and sarcasm - and boosting album sales.

He had to undergo liver surgery but denied any connection to cancer or cirrhosis. His appearances and releases became sparser as he had to rest and recover in Vezelay.
During these final years, he released Love on the Beat , a controversial electronic album with mostly sexual themes examplified by the titular song, for which he sampled actual sexual screams from Bambou , and his last studio album, You're Under Arrest , which presented more synth-driven songs, as well as two live albums.
Gainsbourg appeared in nearly 50 film and television roles. In he wrote music for and appeared as himself in Le Pacha directed by Georges Lautner. In , he appeared in William Klein's pop art satire Mr. They acted together again in Cannabis the following year, and again in Seven Deaths in the Cat's Eye in Throughout his career, Gainsbourg wrote the soundtracks for nearly 60 films and television programs. Gainsbourg, who smoked five packs of unfiltered Gitane cigarettes a day,  died on 2 March of a heart attack , a month shy of his 63rd birthday.
He was buried in the Jewish section of the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris. He elevated the song to the level of art. Since his death, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France.
