I was vey satisfied with my purchase. I was familiar with many of the songs on this CD from listening to a Jimmy C. Newman greatest hits LP I purchased in the '70s. I loved that LP but I guess it contained re-recordings of the songs by Newman, since the versions on this CD are noticeably different.
This CD contains the original hits which are not as polished as Newman's '70s recordings but have the raw energy typical of a lot of country artists' earlier recordings, particularly those who, like Newman, came on the scene in the early and mid '50s and were influenced by Hank Williams. Entertainer Dolly Parton has long credited Newman with enabling her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, in , describing how when she appeared at the Opry unannounced at age 13, asking to sing, Newman relinquished one of his two allotted slots to allow Parton to perform.
